Real Cost of Living in Singapore 2026: What Expats Actually Spend Each Month

Singapore is expensive. That's not a myth — but "expensive" without specifics is useless for planning. The people who struggle financially are usually those who were told about the cost of living without a breakdown.

The single biggest lever is accommodation. Everything else is manageable.

Accommodation: The Deciding Factor

Rent determines more of your monthly budget than every other category combined.

"Living in Tampines instead of the CBD adds 25 minutes to a commute. It saves S$1,200 a month. That's S$14,400 a year — for a longer MRT ride."

Food: The Largest Gap Between Lifestyles

Singapore's hawker culture means you can eat extremely well for very little — but only if you're willing to eat local.

Hawker / Kopitiam
  • Rice + two dishes: S$4–6
  • Chicken rice: S$4.50–6
  • Kopi (coffee): S$1.20–1.80
  • Laksa / noodles: S$5–7
  • Monthly budget: S$350–500
Restaurants / Cafés
  • Main course: S$18–35
  • Set lunch: S$15–25
  • Café coffee: S$6–8
  • Glass of wine: S$14–22
  • Monthly budget: S$1,500–2,500+

Transport

Public transport (MRT + bus) costs S$1.40–2.50 per trip. A typical monthly commute budget: S$100–150.

Owning a car is a very different story. A Certificate of Entitlement (COE) for a standard car currently costs around S$90,000–110,000 — before the car itself. Add road tax, insurance, parking, and maintenance: S$2,500–4,000/month minimum.

Unless you have specific reasons (young children in suburban areas, elderly dependants), a car in Singapore is a luxury, not a necessity.

Utilities

ItemMonthly Cost
Electricity + water (1BR, heavy aircon)S$100–160
Fibre broadband (1Gbps)S$35–50
Mobile SIM onlyS$10–30

What People Consistently Underestimate

Budget items that catch expats off guard

  • Alcohol — Singapore heavily taxes liquor. A S$15 bottle abroad costs S$38–55 here
  • Healthcare without insurance — GP S$40–80; specialist referral S$150–300+
  • Annual flights home — S$900–3,500 per person depending on destination and timing
  • Move-in costs — deposit (2 months rent) + furniture + bedding + setup = S$7,000–12,000
  • International school fees — S$25,000–55,000/year per child
  • Restaurant meals — easy to spend S$400+ on a "normal" dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant with wine
